My car starts and turns back off unless given gas?

i gotta 87 montecarlo ls with a 350 in it and the previous owner said itneeded cylinder heads rebuilt but when i start the car it starts rightup and then dies unless given gas im startin to doubt if its the cylinder heads i nned help in trying to fix this and when it starts it sounds good no funnynoise........
